International College of Liberal Arts (iCLA)

The International College of Liberal Arts (iCLA) is a new residential college established within the campus of Yamanashi Gakuin University in Kofu, Japan. To enable both Japanese and international students to discover their dreams and maximize their unique potential, iCLA provides a rigorous international liberal arts learning environment characterized as follows:

• Nearly all classes in English
• True liberal arts, interdisciplinary curriculum, comprised of courses drawn from the humanities, philosophy, religious studies, social sciences, quantitative reasoning & natural sciences, Japan studies, and health & physical education
• Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC; a 4-year interdisciplinary writing project)
• Small and interactive classes with an average faculty-student ratio of 1:12
• Multicultural living and learning environment (more than 50% of the student body and 80% of faculty are international)
• Mandatory one-year study abroad year with more than 15 destination countries from which to choose

Additional Information iCLA's Japan Studies Program is composed of the Japan Area Studies Program (JAS) and the Japanese Language Program (JLP). A unique feature of JAS is the many experiential workshops taught by masters in Noh theater, Koto and Shakuhachi, Zen and Shinto, Shodo, Sado, and Kado, and the martial arts - Aikido, Judo, Karate, and Shugendo. The JLP includes not only a full range of Japanese language training from introductory to advanced courses, but also courses in Professional Writing in Japanese, Reading Japanese Newspapers, and Public Speech in Japanese. Our Language Acquisition Center (LAC) includes a Japanese Writing Desk to help Japanese and international students improve their Japanese writing skills.

Screening Process On the basis of the following documents:
1. Two letters of recommendation
2. Document to prove application eligibility
3. Academic transcript for the last three years of high school
4. Certificate of the results of university entrance qualification examinations or other standardized tests
5. English proficiency test score (For non-native speakers of English only)
In principle, applicants should submit an original score report of either TOEFL iBT, TOEFL PBT, or
IELTS. TOEFL-ITP is not acceptable:
(1) TOEFL: Minimum requirement: TOEFL iBT 76 or above, TOEFL PBT 540 or above (YGU’s institution code is 7601).
(2) IELTS (Academic Module): Minimum requirement: 5.5 or above
